12 illegal Bangladeshi nationals detained in Delhi, to be deported

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday apprehended 12 Bangladeshi nationals—including six minors—living illegally in East Delhi’s Anand Vihar area. Acting on intelligence inputs, a special team conducted a targeted raid and found the individuals had forged documents to conceal their identities.

The detainees, all natives of Kalirhat village in Bangladesh’s Kurigram district, reportedly entered India through unauthorised riverine routes along the Indo-Bangladesh border. Most are in their late 20s to mid-30s, accompanied by dependent minors.

This operation is part of Delhi Police’s ongoing drive against illegal immigration, with authorities initiating deportation proceedings through the FRRO. Digital evidence linked to Bangladeshi citizenship was also recovered during the raid.

Following specific intelligence inputs, a special team from East Delhi Police conducted a targeted verification drive in Anand Vihar on Wednesday to identify illegal immigrants. The operation combined human intelligence with technical surveillance to track down the individuals.

None of the 12 apprehended could produce valid documents proving Indian citizenship. However, digital evidence—such as photographs and documents linked to Bangladeshi citizenship—was recovered from their mobile phones.

After further interrogation, deportation proceedings will begin. The individuals will be moved to deportation centres, where authorities will facilitate the process following necessary clearances.

“The East Delhi Police remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining law and order and addressing issues related to illegal immigration and national security with unwavering seriousness,” it said in a statement.

Since the commencement of this drive, the East Delhi unit has apprehended and deported 37 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

"Search and verification operations continue across the district to ensure no unauthorised foreign national remains undetected," it further said.
