Amreli: A 25-year-old woman from Gujarat’s Amreli district allegedly died by suicide after reportedly consuming poison-laced food at her workplace due to financial distress linked to mounting debt.
The woman, identified as Bhumika Hareshbhai Sorathia from Bhad village, was employed at a private bank in Amreli-Khambha. According to police sources, she consumed the poisoned food while on duty on Thursday.
Bhumika was first taken to Khambha Government Hospital and later referred to Rajula Hospital, where she died during treatment.
A handwritten suicide note addressed to her parents was recovered from the scene. In the note, Bhumika cited a personal debt of ₹28 lakh, reportedly associated with Shine.com, as the reason for her decision. She stated she had no complaints against her family and accepted full responsibility for her circumstances.
"I was just planning a good life for you, but everything went wrong. I am in debt. This debt is from Shine.com. If possible, try and get the money back. After my death, you will get ₹5 lakh from IIFL. Process it and take it. Please forgive me… Mom, my last wish is that when my dead body comes home, hug me once,” she wrote, ending the letter with ‘Jai Shri Krishna’.
Khambha Police have registered a case of accidental death and have launched an investigation into the financial details mentioned in the note. Authorities are also examining the authenticity of the debt and whether any fraud involving third-party entities may have occurred.
The incident has again drawn attention to growing concerns over financial stress and mental health. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report for 2022, Gujarat recorded 11,292 suicide cases, about 5.7 per cent of the national total.
Mental health experts have warned that increasing debt, job insecurity, and lack of accessible support systems continue to drive many individuals into crisis.
