Avoid escalatory steps: India says as Israel-Iran conflict flares

New Delhi: India on Friday urged both Iran and Israel to remain calm hours after Israel unleashed sweeping attacks across Iran.

Reports say that Israel has hit Iran’s multiple key nuclear and military targets in the pre-dawn strike named Operation Rising Lion.

Anticipating a potential escalation of tension in the region, the Ministry of External Affairs urged both countries to use ‘existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy’.

Calling for the parties to the conflict to resolve ‘underlying issues’, the MEA said ‘We are deeply concerned about the recent developments between Iran and Israel’.

Adding further, the statement said India has been ‘closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites’.

Pointing to India’s ‘close and friendly relations with both countries’, the MEA said India offered support to facilitating peace.

‘Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,’ the MEA reportedly stated.

Alongside, India issued advisory to Indian citizens in the country asking them to avoid ‘unnecessary travel’.
