BJP holds key meet at PM’s residence to discuss organisational reshuffle

New Delhi: The top leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) convened a crucial meeting on Wednesday at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi to deliberate on key organisational changes within the party.

The high-level discussion, attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP’s National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, focused on reshaping the party structure ahead of upcoming elections. Central to the talks was the much-anticipated election of the BJP President.

Party sources revealed that an official announcement regarding the election could be expected within a week. The leadership also reviewed possible changes at the state level, with the names of new state BJP presidents reportedly being discussed for key states, including Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh.

The election for the BJP President, initially scheduled to be completed by February 2025, had been delayed due to ongoing elections in states such as Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Delhi. While the process was supposed to begin in January, it remains pending even as April nears its end. Sources indicated that the election procedure could commence any time after April 20.

Incumbent BJP President J.P. Nadda, who assumed office in January 2020, had his term extended beyond the usual three-year limit to facilitate a smooth leadership transition and to ensure strategic preparedness. According to the BJP’s constitution, the term of the National President is typically three years, and the selection is usually based on internal consensus.

Insiders suggest that the delay in the presidential election stems from the party’s intent to carefully choose a leader capable of further strengthening the organisation. Additionally, the leadership is reportedly considering a generational shift within the party, with the possibility of replacing some current General Secretaries with younger faces to align with the party’s long-term vision.

Sources added that the BJP may announce around half a dozen new state unit presidents within the next two to three days, signaling a broader restructuring effort aimed at energising the party's grassroots and preparing for future electoral challenges.
