Calm prevails in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces stay vigilant

Srinagar: People in Jammu and Kashmir rose to a peaceful morning on Monday, as the night of May 11-12 passed without reports of drone incursions or cross-border shelling. Despite the calm, security forces remained vigilant across the region, maintaining their watch over sensitive areas.

An Indian Army statement confirmed, “The night remained largely peaceful in Jammu and Kashmir and other areas along the international border. No incident has been reported, marking the first calm night in recent days.”

Officials noted that border districts in the Jammu division experienced no drone activity, firing, or shelling overnight. However, army and security personnel continued their high-alert stance along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) throughout the union territory. No cross-border incidents were reported from key areas such as Uri, Kupwara, Poonch, Rajouri, Jammu, Samba, Kathua, and Bandipora.

Despite the current stability, security forces are maintaining a strong presence across Jammu and Kashmir.

The Pakistan Army had violated the ceasefire on Saturday, even after the two countries announced a cessation of hostilities on land, air and sea.

Authorities have urged hundreds of residents living along the LoC and IB to delay returning to their homes, as unexploded shells remain scattered in the affected areas. Security personnel must first clear and defuse these hazardous remnants before declaring the zones safe for civilians.

A preliminary assessment suggests that Pakistan’s mortar shelling has led to the destruction of over 200 residential houses and shops in border regions along the LoC and IB.

Meanwhile, Kashmir University has postponed all scheduled exams until May 14, with a revised timetable to be announced in due course. Decisions regarding the reopening of schools, colleges, and other educational institutions will be made later in the day.

Additionally, all Hajj flights departing from Jammu and Kashmir to Saudi Arabia have been suspended until May 14.
