Canadian NRI arrested in marathoner Fauja Singh accident case

New Delhi: A non-resident Indian has been arrested on Wednesday for allegedly running over the world’s oldest marathoner, Fauja Singh earlier this week.

The 114-year-old Singh died in an accident at Beas village in Jalandhar district on Monday, Scroll reported.

The Jalandhar senior superintendent of police, Harvinder Singh Virk, reportedly said that the accused was a 30-year-old Amritpal Singh Dhillon.

Amritpal Singh Dhillon, a resident of Dasupur village in Kartarpur, had recently returned from Canada.

Dhillon was linked to accident after police found parts of the vehicle’s headlight at the accident scene.

Dhillon is charged with rash or negligent driving or riding on a public way and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Singh’s death caused outpouring of grief with PM Modi leading the mourning saying ‘Fauja Singh ji was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the manner in which he inspired the youth of India on a very important topic of fitness’.

‘He was an exceptional athlete with incredible determination. Pained by his passing away,’ PM Modi added.
