New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday sharply criticized the BJP-led central government, calling the last 11 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi a period marked by "failures" and "anti-people policies". The party accused the ruling regime of fostering societal divisions.
Speaking at a press conference, Congress general secretary and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel alleged that the BJP's politics has consistently focused on polarization rather than governance.
"The 11 years of Narendra Modi is a shining monument of failures and anti-people policies. In the beginning he showed dreams to the people and by the time he completed 11 years, he reached the point of destroying 'sindoor'," Baghel said.
He added that BJP leaders often indulge in harassing and insulting the public, yet no accountability or action follows under this government.
Baghel accused Modi of making divisive statements, citing remarks on identifying people by their attire and references to 'shamshaan' and 'kabristaan'. He claimed the government remained unmoved by the increasing violence and discrimination against Dalits and tribals.
Highlighting specific instances, Baghel pointed to the recent Kumbh Mela stampede in Uttar Pradesh. He said while the state government claimed 37 fatalities, a BBC report alleged the actual death toll was 82.
On demonetization, Baghel said it failed to achieve its stated objectives. "PM Narendra Modi had said that demonetization will end terrorism and Naxalism in the country, but everything is happening contrary to the claim," he said.
The Congress leader also criticized the government’s handling of the COVID-19 crisis, accusing it of lacking basic healthcare infrastructure and instead distracting the public with symbolic gestures like clapping and plate-banging.
The lockdown was imposed without planning, stranding people across the country. Those infected did not receive proper treatment, and lakhs lost their lives. Even today, there's been a sudden spike in deaths post-COVID, yet no study has been conducted, Baghel claimed.
BJP’s much-publicized 11-year record was marked more by hardship for the people than any real progress.
