CPI(M) joins 'Silence for Gaza', the digital protest movement

New Delhi: The Communist Party of India Marxist has joined the global digital protest for the people of Palestine being killed by Israel by joining the 'Silence for Gaza' movement. The party's national general secretary, MA Baby, announced the same.

The decision has been made to observe a week-long digital silence from 9 pm to 9.30 pm. He said that phones, laptops and other digital devices should be turned off and that the message that many people in the world are expressing their disagreement with the great crimes being committed in Palestine can be conveyed through this way of protest in the digital age.

The protest is a coordinated digital campaign by the ‘Silence for Gaza’ movement. The campaigners behind it explain that this is an act of resistance, a global digital protest, and a simple and effective way to highlight a citizen’s anger against the injustice in Gaza, orchestrated by Israel and allies, that has been fueled by the world’s inaction so far. Through this collective action, protesters could send a strong digital signal to the algorithms and show solidarity with Gaza.

Campaigners also brief what happens when people maintain digital silence like this. According to them, social media platforms depend on constant user activity. This system is run by users. A sudden lack of synchronization in activity, even for a short time, can have consequences.

They say that visual algorithms will be disrupted, real-time data traffic statistics will be affected, and technical signals will be sent to servers about unusual user behaviour.

In a hyperconnected world, digital silence is a powerful statement, they say. It highlights a stark contrast between the noise of social media and the enforced silence in Gaza.

If the campaign spreads, it will put pressure on leaders to see that citizens reject the crimes in Gaza. Only then will they take a stand against it, the campaigners say. This is a moment of collective reflection and their goal is to create a wave of progress that will spread around the world, the campaigners add.
