Lawyers in Delhi have staged protests against new criminal legislation they argue introduces harsh provisions, including a controversial extension of police custody from 15 days to 90 days, which they describe as "draconian."
On Monday, lawyers across the city abstained from work to express their discontent. The New Delhi Bar Association (NDBA) and the Shahdara Bar Association were among the groups that passed resolutions urging judicial officers to refrain from issuing adverse rulings. Protesters gathered outside the Patiala House Court complex, wielding placards denouncing the new laws.
Earlier, on Friday, a separate strike was held in response to a controversial order by an administrative civil judge. The order restricted the entry and exit of repair materials in lawyers' chambers without prior approval from the caretaking branch, prompting further outrage within the legal community.
In response to the protests, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the new laws were enacted after thorough consultation. He advised those with concerns to submit formal objections in writing, emphasizing that the Home Ministry is closely monitoring the implementation of the laws. Meghwal assured that the changes are intended to enhance convenience for citizens.
