Chennai: A shocking incident occurred in Anna Nagar West, Chennai, on Thursday morning. A doctor, his wife, and their two sons were found dead in their residence.
Police have identified the victims as Dr. Balamurugan, his wife Sumathi, and their two teenage sons, 17-year-old Dasvanth and 15-year-old Lingesh.
Preliminary investigations by police suggest that financial woes may have played a role in the tragedy, as Dr. Balamurugan had reportedly suffered losses of approximately Rs 5 crore in his diagnostic scan business.
Dr. Balamurugan, who owned a diagnostic scan centre, had reportedly suffered heavy financial losses, leading to significant debts.
Sumathi, the wife of Dr. Balamurugan, was a lawyer practicing in the city court. The couple's elder son, Dasvanth, was a Class 12 student preparing for his board exams, while their younger son, Lingesh, was in Class 10.
The tragic discovery was made on Thursday morning when the family's driver arrived at their residence. After failing to get a response, the driver alerted the neighbours, who peered through the window to find the shocking sight of the family members hanging.
The bodies of Dr. Balamurugan and his wife, Sumathi, were found in one room, while their two sons, Dasvanth and Lingesh, were discovered in another.
Upon receiving the information, city police immediately arrived at the scene, recovered the bodies, and sent them to Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital for further examination and autopsy.
India continues to struggle with suicide, a major public health concern. According to 2022-23 data, Maharashtra reported the highest number of suicides (22,746), followed by Tamil Nadu (19,834) and Madhya Pradesh (15,386). These four states, along with Karnataka and West Bengal, accounted for nearly half of the country's total suicides.
