Kolkata: Kolkata Police have arrested four people and recovered items worth around Rs 17 lakh during multiple raids in connection with a cyber fraud case registered earlier this month.
The operations were carried out jointly by the Cyber Cell of the Port Division and Garden Reach Police Station.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Md Arif Khan (26), Raja Hati (28), Md Ahasan Ali (21) and Bikash Kumar (24). Police seized 39 mobile phones, eight power banks, three sealed wristwatches, a tablet, two sealed Bluetooth speakers, a sealed headphone, a scooter and Rs 2.5 lakh in cash.
The case was filed on 18 July after Sandip Kumar Agarwal (32) reported losing Rs 1.18 lakh to cyber fraudsters. He alleged that unknown individuals had created a fake Axis Bank website with a customer care number. After being persuaded to click on a malicious link sent via WhatsApp, his phone was hacked and Rs 1,18,410 was debited from his account.
Investigations revealed that the accused used the stolen money to buy expensive electronic gadgets for resale across Kolkata. Police found that the gang operated in both Jamtara and Kolkata.
Following prolonged surveillance, multiple raids were conducted on Saturday night, leading to the arrests and recovery of valuables.
Police said efforts are ongoing to trace the money trail and identify others involved in the scam.
