Rejaz M Sheeba Sydeek, a 26-year-old independent journalist from Kerala and a member of the Democratic Students Association, has been booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
His arrest by Nagpur police in Maharashtra took place on May 14, reportedly in connection with critical comments he posted on social media regarding Operation Sindoor — a military operation conducted by India on May 7 targeting Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, following the terror attack in Pahalgam. In addition to his journalism, Sydeek is also known for his work as a social activist.
According to Nagpur police, the journalist had allegedly posted “This is a child!!!! targeting kids is serving justice??? Indian Army murdabad!!!!” and frequently used language such as “Defeat the diehard Hindutva fascist forces” and “Bury Hindutva,” on his social media platforms, Siasat reported.
Rejaz faces charges under Sections 149, 193, 347(1)(v), 347(2), and 347(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023; Section 67 of the Information Technology Act, 2000; and the 38 and 39 Sections of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
Nagpur police have alleged that he has links to banned Maoist groups. According to the chargesheet, he is accused of sharing seditious material, maintaining contact with banned organizations, and possessing Marxist literature.
During his arrest, authorities reportedly seized books, pamphlets, and a letter from a Marxist journal that advocated for peace talks with Maoists and criticized Operation Kagaar.
Police have requested an additional 10 days of custody to further interrogate him.
Meanwhile, demonstrations have taken place in Kochi, where the Rejaz Solidarity Forum called for his immediate release, asserting that “journalism is not a crime.”
