Killing Muslim accusing cattle smuggling: Court sentences 14 to life

Bhopal: A court in Madhya Pradesh has sentenced 14 people to life imprisonment in the 2022 murder of a Muslim man who was attacked after being accused of cattle smuggling.

The case relates to the killing of 50-year-old Nasir Ahmad, a resident of Amravati in Maharashtra. The incident took place on August 2, 2022.

According to the case, Nasir Ahmad and his associates were travelling in a truck carrying cattle from Nanderwada village when they were stopped by a group of cow vigilantes. The attackers, armed with iron rods, allegedly pulled the occupants out of the vehicle and assaulted them.

Nasir Ahmad suffered serious injuries in the attack and later died.

The incident triggered protests in several parts of the country and drew attention to cases of mob violence linked to allegations of cattle smuggling.

The court has now convicted 14 accused in the case and awarded life imprisonment to all of them.

Following the verdict, family members of the convicted men staged a protest outside the court premises and raised slogans against the judgment.

The sentencing comes nearly four years after the incident.
