Maharashtra police selectively targeting Hindu activists: VHP alleges

Mumbai: The Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other right-wing outfits on Tuesday will take out a protest march to the Mumbai Police Commissioner’s office against ‘police atrocities’ on Hindu activists.

The VHP has announced the march from South Mumbai’s Churchgate railway station accusing the police of selectively targeting ‘Hindu workers’ in the name of law and order, The Indian Express reported.

Mahendra Salekar, secretary of VHP Konkan division reportedly said: ‘The police are selectively targeting Hindu workers under the pretext of law and order. We demand a fair investigation into such incidents and protection of Hindu society’s rights.’

Explaining the rationale behind the march when the BJP is ruling the state, Mahendra Salekar alleged that nevertheless the higher-ups had given them the assurance of police permission to hold rallies, it did not happen.

The march is expected to invite the attention of Maharastra administration and citizens alike to the alleged police atrocities in Mumbai’s Wakola and Wadala.

The right-wing organisations accused the police of beating up their activities for attempting to hold procession in Wadala earlier this month and arrested them under false charges.

At least seven persons were arrested after two groups clashed in Wakola area on Saturday night leaving three persons injured, alongside vandalizing shops and vehicles, according to the report citing police.

A VHP leader reportedly claimed that police action was ‘selectively harsh on Hindu workers’ and warned that they would intensify protest across Mumbai in the event of police not stopping their ‘ biased actions’.

‘Our rally is aimed at seeking justice. We are committed to conducting it peacefully, but our patience must not be tested,’ Salekar was quoted as saying.
