Imphal/Itanagar: Mild earthquakes were felt in Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh on Wednesday, but no loss of life or property damage has been reported, according to state disaster management officials.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) recorded a 3.2 magnitude quake in Manipur’s Imphal East district at a depth of 37 km, while a 3.6 magnitude tremor struck Arunachal Pradesh’s Tawang district at a shallow depth of 5 km.
The region had previously experienced seismic activity on June 2, when earthquakes measuring 3.3 and 3.5 were recorded in Arunachal’s Lepa Rada district and Manipur’s Churachandpur district, respectively. Another mild tremor of 3.6 magnitude was reported in Assam’s Kamrup district on June 3.
On May 28, three successive earthquakes, the strongest measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, struck Manipur’s hilly districts of Churachandpur and Noney within a span of nine hours. Despite the intensity, no casualties or damages were reported.
According to NCS data, northeastern India, comprising eight states, experienced 20 earthquakes in May alone, most of them mild. Arunachal Pradesh recorded the highest number with seven quakes, followed by Manipur with five, and Assam and Meghalaya with four each.
Experts note that the region lies in one of the world’s most seismically active zones. The frequent tremors have prompted both government and private builders to adopt quake-resistant construction practices to reduce risks in the future.
