Nagpur violence: Situation under control, curfew remains in sensitive areas

Nagpur: The law and order situation in Nagpur, which witnessed violent clashes on Monday night, is now under control, but curfew remains in place across several sensitive areas, a senior police official confirmed on Wednesday.

Police Commissioner Ravinder Kumar Singal said the situation would be reassessed in the afternoon. Meanwhile, security has been heightened, with over 2,000 armed personnel deployed across vulnerable parts of the city. Quick Response Teams (QRT) and Riot Control Police (RCP), under the leadership of a DCP-rank officer, are conducting regular patrols to ensure stability.

The violence erupted on Monday night in the Chitnis Park locality of Mahal, central Nagpur, following rumors that a holy book of a particular community had been burned during an agitation by a right-wing group demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district. The unrest escalated as stones were hurled at police, leading to widespread clashes.

At least 34 police personnel sustained injuries during the violence, prompting authorities to impose a curfew, restricting public movement and vehicular traffic in the affected areas. According to a city police press release, the curfew remains in effect in areas under the jurisdiction of Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shant Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar police stations. During this period, deputy commissioners of police (DCPs) in these zones will determine the extent of vehicular movement permitted on the streets.

A senior official reported that 12 policemen, including three DCPs, were injured in the clashes. So far, authorities have arrested around 50 individuals in connection with the stone pelting and incidents of arson.
