Nitish cabinet approves Bihar Youth Commission to boost jobs, education

Patna: In a major step aimed at empowering young people and boosting employment opportunities, the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government has approved the formation of the Bihar Youth Commission. The decision was taken on Tuesday during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, where 43 key proposals—including development schemes, economic decisions, and recruitment processes—also received approval.

Announcing the development on social media, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar stated, “I am happy to inform you that with the aim of providing maximum employment opportunities to the youth of Bihar, training them, and making them empowered and capable, the state government has decided to constitute the Bihar Youth Commission, which has been approved by the cabinet today.”

The Bihar Youth Commission will serve as an advisory body to the state government on all matters concerning the development and welfare of youth. Its role will include coordination with various government departments to improve access to education and employment, and to promote skill development initiatives. The commission’s broader mission is to ensure that the youth of Bihar are not only educated and employable but also self-reliant and future-ready.

The newly constituted body will include one chairman, two vice-chairmen, and seven members, with a maximum age limit of 45 years for all appointees. It will also monitor the implementation of youth-oriented government policies and ensure that local youth are given priority in recruitment across both public and private sectors within Bihar.

In a significant move, the commission will also focus on the welfare of Bihari youth studying or working outside the state. It aims to protect their interests and act as a bridge between them and the state administration.

Additionally, the commission will be tasked with developing programmes to combat alcohol and drug abuse among young people. It will submit recommendations to the government on social challenges affecting the youth, contributing to policymaking aimed at fostering a healthier and more productive younger generation.

Describing the initiative as “visionary,” Chief Minister Nitish Kumar emphasised the government’s commitment to making the youth of Bihar “self-reliant, skilled, and employment-oriented so that their future remains secure.”

The formation of the Bihar Youth Commission is widely seen as a timely and strategic move by the government to address the aspirations of the state’s large youth population—particularly in the context of the upcoming Assembly elections.
