New Delhi: In the matter of the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, the CBI is going to close the investigation after a Delhi court gave permission to the central probe agency to do so. Granting permission, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari of Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court directed CBI to resume the investigation and inform the court if it gets any credible information about Najeeb's whereabouts.
The CBI informed the court that despite searching in all available ways, Najeeb could not be found. The CBI then submitted a report to the Delhi High Court concluding the investigation.
The judge Maheshwari said that there was no evidence to suspect that any person or anything was behind the disappearance. The court rejected the allegation of Najeeb's mother that the CBI had lapses in the investigation. The court also stated that it was aware of the plight of a mother who had been searching for her son, who had been missing since 2016.
Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year master's degree student, went missing from the hostel of JNU on October 15, 2016. The disappearance came a day after a clash with some students associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of BJP. The case was initially investigated by the Delhi Police and later handed over to the CBI.
The CBI stopped the investigation in October 2018, claiming a lack of progress in the case. Najeeb Ahmed's lawyer had earlier alleged that this was a political case and that the CBI had bowed to pressure from their masters.
