The Tata group has announced that compensation will also be provided to the 33 individuals who died on the ground in the recent Air India Dreamliner crash in Ahmedabad, which has brought the total death toll to 274 as of Saturday.
Reports indicate that the group intends to extend the Rs one crore compensation package to these victims, in addition to covering the medical expenses of those injured in the incident.
Sources close to the matter said that the Tata group is committed to ensuring all injured individuals receive necessary medical care and ongoing support. Victims of the crash are believed to include a mix of doctors, students, hospital workers, and local residents from Meghaninagar, a neighbourhood situated near the airport.
It has also been indicated that the company will assist in rebuilding the hostel at B J Medical College, which suffered significant damage during the crash, Indian Express reported.
Authorities have confirmed that 241 passengers and crew members lost their lives aboard the ill-fated Air India Dreamliner, with only one person surviving the crash.
The other 33 victims are believed to have been on the campus of Ahmedabad’s BJ Medical College when the aircraft went down.
When questioned about the possibility of providing further assistance—such as employment opportunities for the families of the deceased—sources within the Tata group indicated that no additional measures have been finalized. Officials reportedly stated that the situation is still being evaluated and that an investigation is underway.
In addition to the Rs one crore compensation announced by the Tata group, each deceased passenger is expected to receive close to Rs 1.5 crore in insurance payouts.
The primary insurers for the Air India policy are: Tata AIG General Insurance (lead insurer with over 40 per cent share), ICICI Lombard General Insurance, New India Assurance and other PSU general insurers. The final bill is expected to be covered by reinsurers led by AIG.
