Kolkata: Some unidentified men fired three shots at Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Rezzak Khan before hacking him to death in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district on Thursday night, The Indian Express reported citing police.
The 38-year-old leader was attacked when he was returning home after attending a party meeting.
Khan, known to be close to TMC MLA Saokat Mollah, was the Chaltaberia area president of the party.
Mollah, the MLA for Canning Purba constituency, accused the Indian Secular Front (ISF) of Khan’s murder, which the party denied.
‘Under the instruction of MLA Naushad Siddiqui, ISF miscreants murdered Rezzak. We are demanding strong action against all the culprits,’ Mollah reportedly said.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma is reportedly visiting the place to oversee the investigation.
Khan’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination.
Rezzak, who was previously close to TMC leader Arabul Islam in Bhangar, later moved to the Mollah camp.
