US student held at Chennai airport for carrying banned satellite phone

Chennai: Security personnel at Chennai International Airport detained a 22-year-old American student early on Thursday after a satellite phone, prohibited in India for security reasons, was found in his luggage.

The incident occurred as a Scoot Airlines flight to Singapore was preparing to depart at 12.30 am. During a routine baggage scan, officials discovered the device in the possession of Oakley Jackson, who was travelling to Australia via Singapore.

Jackson, a university student from the United States, had arrived in Chennai from Delhi last week on a tourist visit. He told officials that he was unaware of the ban and had brought the phone from the US to Delhi and Chennai without facing any issues earlier.

Airport security rejected his explanation, citing national security concerns. His ticket was cancelled, and the satellite phone was seized. Jackson and the device were handed over to the airport police for further investigation.

Police are examining whether the student used the phone during his stay in Chennai and if he had any contacts through the device while in India. “Satellite phones can bypass conventional communication networks, and their unmonitored usage poses a serious security threat,” a senior airport official said, adding that strict action is taken whenever such devices are detected.

The US Consulate in Chennai has been informed, and embassy officials are expected to provide assistance to Jackson.

Possessing a satellite phone without prior clearance from the Department of Telecommunications is a punishable offence in India. Authorities have repeatedly warned foreign visitors to declare such devices and seek permission before entry.

Further action will depend on the outcome of the investigation and whether any misuse of the phone is established. Jackson remains in police custody while inquiries continue.
