Chennai: In a disturbing incident of domestic violence, a woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her husband at the Kulithalai Government Hospital in Tamil Nadu’s Karur district early on Sunday. The accused, identified as Vishruth, is currently on the run, and police have launched a manhunt to trace him.
According to sources, Vishruth and his wife, Shruthi, had a heated argument at their residence in Karur late on Saturday night. During the altercation, Vishruth is said to have physically assaulted Shruthi, following which she was taken to the government hospital for treatment.
In the early hours of Sunday, Vishruth reportedly entered the hospital under the guise of visiting her, carrying a knife hidden in his clothing. He then stabbed Shruthi multiple times, killing her instantly before fleeing the scene. Hospital staff and bystanders were left in shock as the attack unfolded in front of them.
Police arrived at the hospital soon after the incident and registered a case of murder. A search operation is underway to locate the accused.
The murder has raised serious concerns about patient safety and the lack of adequate security in government-run hospitals. It has also reignited debate over the rising number of domestic violence-related deaths in Tamil Nadu.
In recent months, the state has witnessed several such brutal cases. In June, a man in Tirunelveli set his wife ablaze following a marital dispute. In another case in May, a laborer from Bihar fatally attacked his estranged wife with a sickle near a family court in Vellore. Earlier this year, a woman was hacked to death by her husband at a primary health center in Villupuram, in full public view.
These repeated acts of violence have triggered calls for stricter enforcement of domestic violence laws, quicker police intervention, and the establishment of better support systems for women facing abuse.
Social activists have also urged the government to bolster hospital security and create crisis response units for victims of domestic violence.
As the investigation into Shruthi’s murder continues, the incident stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need for stronger protective measures and preventive action against domestic abuse.
