In an order of the Kerala High Court granting bail to a 91-year-old man accused of allegedly assaulting his 88-year-old wife following an argument involving allegations that he had illicit relations with other women.
The court, while acknowledging the gravity of the incident, observed that the wife’s continued attention towards her husband reflected her enduring affection for him.
Justice P V Kunhikrishnan, who issued the order, remarked that love does not fade with age but rather becomes brighter over time. He reminded the elderly husband that, in his advanced years, his wife would be his greatest source of support, and similarly advised the wife to see her husband as her strength.
The judge also emphasized that a successful marriage is not defined by perfection, but by the couple's ability to embrace and navigate their differences, Indian Express reported.
The judge drew upon the emotional depth of Malayalam poet N N Kakkad’s poem Saphalamee Yathra, written during the poet’s final days. He referred to the work to highlight how love between partners can deepen with age.
The court expressed hope that the elderly couple, Thevan and Kunjali, would be able to complete their innings of life with happiness. He emphasized that in old age, a spouse becomes one’s closest companion and source of support.
The court concluded that in the interest of ensuring a peaceful and supportive relationship, bail could be granted to Thevan, expressing confidence that both husband and wife would look after each other.
