Govindachamy got no help from staff, inmates in jailbreak attempt: DIG report

Thiruvananthapuram: The jailbreak of Govindachamy from Kannur Central Prison was the result of serious lapses in supervision and systemic flaws, according to a report submitted by the North Zone Jail DIG.

DIG V Jayakumar, who prepared the report and handed it over to Prisons Director General Balram Kumar Upadhyay, reportedly stated that the incident had caused considerable embarrassment to the prison department. The findings suggested that Govindachamy did not receive any external or internal assistance from prison staff or fellow inmates during his escape, TNIE reported.

The report noted that Govindachamy managed to take advantage of the approach of prison officials to acquire certain materials, which were later used in planning and executing his escape. It was also mentioned that he disguised himself in clothes typically worn by remand prisoners while fleeing.

Although there was no evidence of collusion with other inmates, the report raised concerns over how he managed to cut through the iron grill of his cell without attracting attention.

Additionally, the report underscored the ongoing issue of staff shortages in the prison, emphasising that this lack of personnel has been hindering the effective functioning and oversight of jail operations.
