Kozhikode: Torrential rains continue across the state. Kozhikode, Wayanad, and Kannur districts are expected to receive very heavy rain today, as the Central Meteorological Department has said that the situation is similar to a red alert. Thrissur, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts are on orange alert, and other districts are on yellow alert. Trains are running late due to trees falling on the railway tracks at several places last night.
Five people died in various rain-related accidents on Monday across Kerala. In Kollam’s Pattazhi, 51-year-old Baiju Varghese died after a tree branch fell on him. While he was removing a tree that had fallen in the yard of his house after winds, a tree branch fell on him. A girl died after a makeshift shop collapsed in strong winds on Alappuzha beach. The body of Lagesh, a native of Mudakkara, who went missing while bathing in the sea in Thankassery, Kollam, was found.
An elderly man died after being electrocuted while trying to replace a broken electric wire in Koothattukulam Palakuzha, Ernakulam, and a youth died after being swept away by the current in Muvattupuzha. The elderly was rushed to the hospital but could not be saved.
Jobin Joseph (38) of Perumballur Kuttiyara died after being swept away by the current in Muvattupuzha while trying to free a cow tied to a paddy field.
Train traffic was disrupted after trees fell on the railway track. On Monday evening, at around 6.45 pm, strong winds blew down the roofs of houses and trees on the railway track between Kallai and Farok in Kozhikode. Train traffic on the Shoranur-Mangalore route was halted for several hours due to the collapse of the line, and the power supply was cut. Although traffic has been restored, many trains are running late. Trees fell on the Thiruvalla-Changanassery route, Thrissur-Guruvayur route, and Thiruvananthapuram-Edava railway route on Monday.
A red alert has been issued for the coastal areas of Kerala due to the possibility of sea erosion and high waves. A low-pressure area is located over Marathwada. Another low-pressure area is likely to form over the north Bay of Bengal today, the Meteorological Department said. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
