Thiruvananthapuram: Afan, the sole accused in the recent sensational mass murder case in Venjaramoodu near Thiruvananthapuram, attempted suicide at the central prison on Sunday, police officials confirmed. The 23-year-old was immediately rushed to the Government Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

The suicide attempt occurred just two days after the Pangodu police filed a charge sheet in one of the murder cases before a local court. According to an official from Poojappura Central Prison, Afan went to the toilet around 11:00 am and tried to hang himself using a cloth. Jail officials on duty quickly discovered the attempt and acted promptly to save him.

Details about Afan’s current condition remain unavailable. He is accused of brutally killing five people, including his 88-year-old grandmother, his 13-year-old brother, a woman believed to be his lover, his paternal uncle, and the uncle’s wife. Although Afan also attacked his mother, she survived after several days of hospital treatment.

Following the horrific crime, Afan surrendered to police in Venjaramoodu and confessed to the murders, police officers said.
