In an effort to foster healthier physical and mental habits among students, Wadi Rahma English School has launched a month-long Anti-Sugar and Well-being Campaign titled BLISS BITES. The initiative, aimed at embedding wellness into the core of school life, seeks to raise awareness about the harmful effects of excessive sugar consumption and promote mindful lifestyle choices among students and their families.
The campaign was inaugurated by Dr Ayesha Nasreen, Executive Trustee and Director of the KMCT Group of Institutions, at a formal function held in the school auditorium.
The initiative is rooted in growing concerns over high sugar consumption among children, as evidenced by the ECA-APER survey conducted nationwide. The survey revealed that 75% of children aged 2–15 consume sugary items daily, with many parents unaware of the recommended sugar intake levels. In response, Wadi Rahma has taken a proactive stance by combining education, creativity, and community outreach to address the issue.
Over the course of the campaign, students will engage in a variety of interactive and educational activities such as nutrition-themed classroom discussions, slogan and poster-making competitions, and 'Healthy Tiffin' days. A key highlight will be an exhibition revealing hidden sugars in everyday food items, intended to help students make more informed dietary choices.
To extend the campaign’s impact beyond the classroom, awareness videos developed by students and teachers are being shared with families. Topics already covered include healthy diets, the nutritional needs of children, daily routines, and foods with high sugar content. Additionally, students will showcase rap performances and folk songs themed around health and well-being, adding a cultural and creative layer to the initiative.
Addressing mental and emotional well-being is also central to the campaign. Recognising rising stress levels and digital dependence among children, the school has organised mindfulness sessions, guided meditations, art therapy activities, and journaling exercises for various age groups. Teachers will receive special orientation sessions to help them identify signs of psychological distress and provide timely support.
Parental involvement is being actively encouraged through dedicated workshops focusing on nutrition, emotional bonding, and screen time management. Weekly wellness flyers, checklists, and practical tips are being circulated to ensure that families remain informed and engaged throughout the campaign.
As part of its collaborative approach, Wadi Rahma has also partnered with healthcare professionals, nutritionists, and child psychologists to provide expert guidance, ensuring that all campaign content is accurate, age-appropriate, and impactful.
With BLISS BITES, Wadi Rahma aims not just to tackle sugar-related health issues, but to instil lasting habits that support overall well-being. By engaging students, teachers, and parents alike, the school is striving to build a culture of wellness that transcends the classroom and becomes a way of life.
The campaign, while time-bound, is part of a broader vision by the school to integrate health education permanently into its curriculum, reflecting a commitment to nurturing healthier, happier, and more resilient future generations.
