Whose friend is Trump?

The agenda and evil designs of American imperialism are being increasingly exposed to the world with each passing day. Even decades ago, the United States maintained a favourable bias towards Pakistan, nurturing and empowering it with weapons and financial aid. In recent times, however, the Indian government has been adopting a submissive stance toward the same America. Just like in the past, whenever there were conflicts between India and Pakistan, the U.S. consistently sided with Pakistan, and this time too, there has been no significant change in that position. While the Indian Army was carrying out operations against Pakistan terror bases, U.S. President Donald Trump suddenly claimed that he had intervened and facilitated a ceasefire, a move that was clearly aimed at assisting Pakistan. Trump kept repeating this assertion, downplaying the Indian Army’s account, which stated that the ceasefire was decided only after Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations, rattled by India's advance, contacted the Indian counterpart. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who proudly claims Trump as his friend, and even went so far as to campaign for him during the U.S. elections, was never willing to deny the U.S. President’s claims or to uphold the Indian Army’s stance, not even once.

In the wake of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor, India had sent delegations to various countries to explain its position before the international community. It was a delegation led by Dr Shashi Tharoor MP, who has been at odds with the Congress party, that undertook the visit to the United States. However, instead of meeting with foreign government representatives or key policymakers in a manner that would help enhance India’s image, many delegations were accused of merely visiting Indian embassies and affiliated circles, watching cultural performances by the Indian diaspora, attending banquets, and using the trip to gain personal mileage. It remains unclear how effective this outreach effort truly was in accurately conveying India’s position to the international community or in garnering meaningful support. However, in the current context, President Donald Trump’s recent actions clearly indicate where the U.S. administration’s priorities and sympathies truly lie. Even before the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Pakistan expatriates had been making provocative, hate-filled statements against India. Yet, even after Operation Sindoor, without showing the slightest remorse or respect for the opponent, Pakistan's military chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, continued his evasive stance. Despite this, Trump invited him to the White House, hosted a lunch in his honour, and held discussions. Accompanying him was Lt. General Asim Malik, the head of the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI, which orchestrates all covert operations against India. It wouldn’t have been unusual if the Pakistani President or Prime Minister were invited for such a reception. However, it’s difficult to view the hosting of the military chief and the intelligence head in the same light. It was initially expected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi might meet President Trump during the G7 summit but that meeting did not happen. In fact, Trump even cut short his visit to Canada and returned to the White House to host the Pakistani military chief. Trump stated that the Pakistani military chief was invited to thank him for helping to end the conflict with India and that their meeting took place only after the luncheon. While praising the Indian Prime Minister, he also openly declared that he loved  Pakistan.

Analysts believe that this lunch and praise were part of a strategic move to align Pakistan with the U.S. in the wake of Israel’s terror attacks on Iran, which were carried out with America’s blessings. Although Pakistan condemned Israel’s actions, it neither has the courage nor the capability to go beyond the dictates of its arms supplier, the United States. So, it is unlikely that Trump would have served lunch to such a guest only to woo Pakistan and win its support. Trump's motives are clearly different. From all his actions so far, there is one reality that both Modi and Munir or anyone else for that matter must come to terms with: Trump is not a reliable friend to anyone.  As the head of American imperialism who poses as the one to control all the events of the world and desperately in an attempt to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Trump’s support has brought nothing but wars of destruction and widespread devastation on the planet. He is unwilling to even lift a finger to stop Israel, which violates ceasefire agreements and bombs innocent children, killing them through starvation and violence. At the same time, he and his administration raises calls for war against Iran’s leadership, who are resisting these acts of terror. This shows that Trump and his government do not truly care for any other nation in the world, or even for the American people themselves. Trump is ironically attempting to lecture other nations on civility and democracy at a time when the American people themselves are taking to the streets in protest, exhausted by authoritarian rule and rampant corruption. It is high time the leaders of nations,  who deceive their own people and keep amassing weapons of destruction just to win America’s favour, recognize this for what it is.
