New Delhi: Indian women’s hockey forward Deepika has made history by becoming the first-ever Indian player to win the prestigious Poligras Magic Skill Award. The accolade, determined entirely by global fan votes, was awarded for her remarkable solo goal against the Netherlands during the Bhubaneswar leg of the 2024–25 FIH Hockey Pro League season.
The 21-year-old forward captured worldwide attention with her dazzling play in the 35th minute of the match, where she ignited India’s comeback against the top-ranked Dutch side. With India trailing 0-2, Deepika made a brilliant solo run down the left flank, slicing through the Dutch defence. She dribbled along the baseline, deftly lifted the ball over a defender’s stick, and calmly finished past the goalkeeper to put India on the scoreboard. The match eventually ended in a 2-2 draw, with India going on to win in the shootout.
Overjoyed with the honour, Deepika said, “I am truly honoured to have won this award. Scoring that goal against a challenging opponent like the Netherlands was a special moment for me, and receiving this recognition means a lot. I thank my teammates, coaches, family, and friends who continue to support and inspire me every day. This award isn’t just mine; it belongs to Indian hockey. Let’s keep pushing forward together.”
The Poligras Magic Skill Award, presented by the FIH (International Hockey Federation), celebrates the most skilful and creative moments of the FIH Hockey Pro League season. Deepika’s goal was among three shortlisted in the women’s category, alongside entries from Spain’s Patricia Alvarez and the Australian women’s team.
Her win marks a milestone for Indian hockey, showcasing its rising talent on the global stage. The award was decided solely through fan votes from around the world, with Deepika emerging as the clear favourite.
In the men’s category, Belgium’s Victor Wegnez won the award for his exceptional midfield play that led to a team goal against Spain.
