AI won’t replace developers, it will amplify them: GitHub CEO

In a recent episode of The Silicon Valley Girl Podcast, GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke shared his perspective on the future of software development in an AI-driven world.

Challenging the fear that artificial intelligence will replace developers, Dohmke argued that AI is set to boost hiring and productivity within the tech industry, not diminish it.

“If you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x,” he explained, suggesting that AI acts as a force multiplier for skilled engineers rather than a substitute.

Addressing current concerns around job losses and hiring freezes in tech, Dohmke called these trends “temporary reactions” and “a natural conclusion for the short term.”

He noted that, contrary to the belief that AI might reduce workloads, it has actually increased the number of tasks companies need to manage. “AI has already added more work to the backlogs. I haven't seen companies saying, 'Well, we're draining all our backlog and we have almost nothing left',” he said.

Dohmke also cautioned against the notion that AI could enable anyone to launch billion-dollar tech businesses without any programming knowledge. “I think the idea that AI without any coding skills lets you just build a billion-dollar business is mistaken. Because if that would be the case, everyone would do it,” he said.

The GitHub CEO believes AI will lower the barriers to entry in software development by making it easier for beginners to learn and for seasoned developers to be more productive. “As the technology evolves, so will the capabilities of engineers,” he noted.

Dohmke concluded by calling this era “the most exciting time to be a developer,” reflecting on the power of today’s tools to quickly bring creative ideas to life.

“The dream of software development was always that I can take the idea that I have in my head on a Sunday morning, and by the evening, I have the app up and running on my phone,” he said.
