Mark Zuckerberg outlines vision for AI ‘personal superintelligence’

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has shared his vision for “personal superintelligence,” saying artificial intelligence should empower individuals to achieve personal goals rather than replace human jobs through full automation.

“Meta’s vision is to bring personal superintelligence to everyone. We believe in putting this power in people’s hands to direct it toward what they value in their own lives,” Zuckerberg said in a blog post on Wednesday. He contrasted his approach with other industry leaders who see superintelligence as a way to automate valuable work, leaving people dependent on its output.

Superintelligence, which does not yet exist, would be an AI system capable of self-learning, writing code at or above human level, and potentially making emotional or ethical decisions. Current AI tools, including chatbots such as ChatGPT, remain far from that level of autonomy.

Meta’s Superintelligence Labs and its newly recruited team will focus on building AI that enhances people’s personal lives rather than automating jobs, amid concerns about workplace disruption caused by AI adoption. “Superintelligence has the potential to begin a new era of personal empowerment, where people will have greater agency to improve the world in the directions they choose,” Zuckerberg said.

Although he did not announce specific products, Zuckerberg hinted that future AI models may power Meta’s existing ecosystem of apps, including Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, as well as devices such as smart glasses, augmented reality headsets and mixed-reality products.

Meta has invested heavily in artificial intelligence, spending billions to recruit top AI researchers and engineers. Earlier this month, the company invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and hired its CEO, Alexandr Wang, to lead Meta’s Superintelligence team. The group includes high-profile hires from Apple, OpenAI and leading universities.

Zuckerberg noted that while Meta intends to share the benefits of superintelligence widely, safety risks would need to be carefully managed. He suggested Meta may adopt a more closed approach to its AI models, despite previously releasing partially open-source Llama models.

The company reported strong second-quarter earnings, with revenue of $47.52 billion, surpassing expectations. Meta has forecast total expenses for 2025 between $114 billion and $118 billion as it ramps up AI investment.

Zuckerberg also highlighted Meta’s progress with AI-enabled hardware. Sales of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, which integrate AI features, more than tripled in the first half of the year, according to manufacturer EssilorLuxottica.

“I think personal devices like glasses that can see what we see, hear what we hear, and interact with us throughout the day will become our main computing devices,” Zuckerberg said in a video posted on X.
