Melbourne: Gaurav, an Indian-origin man, got pinned by Australian Police to the ground, putting pressure on his neck and is now in hospital in a coma. According to reports, he had screamed, trying to say that he was innocent, before losing consciousness. South Australian police pushed him to the ground and kneed him on the neck during his arrest. Doctors at the Royal Adelaide Hospital said the 42-year-old, who is in a coma after being physically assaulted, is now fighting for his life. His partner, Amritpal Kaur, said a police officer kneeled on his neck, Australia Today reported. She added that Gaurav’s head hit a police car during the incident.
Police claim that Gaurav, who had ‘left his house in a drunken state’, became violent while being arrested and resisted arrest. A witness said a passing patrol car responded to what appeared to be a domestic dispute. Footage obtained by Australia Today shows police stopping Gaurav on the road and him and his partner Amritpal pleading their innocence. Kaur had reiterated that the couple were just arguing and that Gaurav was not violent, even though he was drunk. She said her partner’s head hit the police patrol car and the road later during the arrest.
Reports say that South Australian Police have launched an investigation and are reviewing camera footage related to the incident.
