Amid growing global tension between Israel and Iran, the 2025 G7 Summit in Canada has taken a dramatic turn.
US President Donald Trump abruptly departed from the summit a day earlier than planned, stirring speculation about the motive behind his exit — speculation he promptly denied.
Addressing the rumors head-on, President Trump dismissed claims made by French President Emmanuel Macron, who suggested that Trump had left the summit to push for a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.
“Publicity seeking President Emmanuel Macron, of France, mistakenly said that I left the G7 Summit, in Canada, to go back to D.C. to work on a ‘cease fire’ between Israel and Iran. Wrong! He has no idea why I am now on my way to Washington, but it certainly has nothing to do with a Cease Fire. Much bigger than that. Whether purposely or not, Emmanuel always gets it wrong. Stay Tuned,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social account.
Macron, speaking to reporters earlier, had said, “There is indeed an offer to meet and exchange. An offer was made especially to get a ceasefire and to then kick-start broader discussions … We have to see now whether the sides will follow.”
According to Fox News’ Lawrence Jones, President Trump has asked the US National Security Council (NSC) to be ready in the situation room, further fuelling speculation about the gravity of the “bigger” development he hinted at.
In a post on Truth Social before his departure, Trump criticised Iran, saying, “Iran should have signed the deal” to limit its nuclear program and warned all Iranians to “immediately evacuate” Tehran. He called the current state of affairs “a shame.”
In a joint statement, G7 leaders reiterated their support for Israel, condemning Iran as a destabilising force in the region. “We affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel,” the statement read. It further stated, “Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror,” and reaffirmed, “Iran can never have a nuclear weapon.”
Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Calgary, Canada, to participate in the summit discussions. He is expected to address key issues such as energy security, infrastructure, and equitable access to technology.
“Landed in Calgary, Canada, to take part in the G7 Summit. Will be meeting various leaders at the Summit and sharing my thoughts on important global issues. Will also be emphasising the priorities of the Global South,” Modi posted on X.
While the summit hosts leaders from the world’s most influential democracies, Canada-India relations remain strained. Both countries are working to insulate bilateral ties from the fallout of an ongoing judicial process linked to the 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
