Trump to sign ‘big beautiful bill’ today after Congress passes it

Washington: The White House has announced that US President Donald Trump is set to sign his extensive domestic policy bill on Friday evening, coinciding with the Fourth of July, the nation’s Independence Day.

"The one 'big, beautiful bill' has passed the House of Representatives and will be at the President's desk for signature at a big, beautiful signing ceremony tomorrow at 5 p.m. on the Fourth of July, just as the President always said and hoped it would be," said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt during a press call on Thursday shortly after the bill cleared its final legislative hurdle.

Although Trump had long targeted the July 4 deadline, his stance on meeting that date reportedly wavered as the bill encountered multiple legislative setbacks.

This marks the first significant legislative success of Trump’s second term, as Republican leaders managed to rally a fractured GOP behind the President’s ambitious domestic agenda after a strenuous lobbying effort.

On Thursday afternoon, House Republicans approved the expansive legislation, which includes sweeping tax cuts, deep reductions in federal spending, and increased funding for both the Pentagon and border enforcement. The Senate had passed the measure earlier in the week.

The GOP's legislative breakthrough arrived just six months into Trump’s second term—a pace that had appeared uncertain until the bill's final vote.

To consolidate support, Trump and his congressional allies intensified their outreach to sceptical Republicans, framing the bill as critical to fulfilling key campaign pledges on immigration and tax reform. The package also implements substantial cuts to social safety net programmes.

The narrow House vote of 218-214 came after weeks of negotiation, delivering Trump a major political milestone and advancing priorities that enhance funding for his anti-immigration policies.

“The Republicans in the House of Representatives have just passed the “ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL ACT.” Our Party is UNITED like never before, and our Country is “hot.” We are going to have a Signing Celebration at the White House tomorrow, at 4 P.M. EST. All Congressmen/women and Senators are invited. Together, we will celebrate our Nation’s Independence and the beginning of our new Golden Age,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

“The people of the United States of America will be Richer, Safer, and Prouder than ever before."

The bill reinforced Trump’s influence over the Republican Party, despite internal party concerns about its impact on the national debt and reductions to welfare programs.

Speaker Mike Johnson played a key role in converting reluctant Republicans, working late into the night to secure enough votes for the legislation dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill."

Proceedings in the House were delayed as Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered an extended speech opposing the bill, speaking for nearly nine hours.

After passing the Senate on Tuesday, the bill returned to the House for final approval on amendments before moving to the President’s desk.

"Today we are laying a key cornerstone of America's new Golden Age," said Speaker Johnson.

Democrats have criticised the bill as disproportionately favouring the wealthy, suggesting public backlash could aid their efforts to regain control of the House in the 2026 midterms.
