Entertainment: The authorities of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival have banned nudity and “excessively voluminous” clothing on the red carpet for its 78th edition, which starts on Tuesday, reports NDTV.

The fest allegedly took the decision after a demonstrator appeared topless in the 2022 edition. There are also reports that the fest authorities were forced to take the decision after Bianco Censori appeared in a transparent dress at the Grammys earlier this year.

The festival issued a statement, which read, "This year, the Cannes Film Festival has made explicit in its charter certain rules that have long been in effect. The aim is not to regulate attire per se, but to prohibit full nudity on the red carpet, in accordance with the institutional framework of the event and French law."

It further said that the fest reserves the right to deny access to individuals whose attire could obstruct the movement of other guests or complicate seating arrangements in the screening rooms.

NDTV says that there are, however, no clear instructions on whether a wardrobe like Greta Gerwig's poufy Barbie-pink ensemble with a medium-sized train would be banned. However, tote bags, backpacks, and large bags are "prohibited" during the gala screenings. New rules will affect voluminous dresses, with long trains and some others. The rules state that long and overly capacious dresses "hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre," NDTV quoted.

The event, which starts on May 13, will continue till May 24. Bollywood celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shalini Passi, Sharmila Tagore, Karan Johar, Janhvi Kapoor, etc., will attend it this year.
