Los Angeles: Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro’s latest directorial venture Frankenstein received a rapturous 13-minute standing ovation following its premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.

The film, screened on Saturday, drew the longest ovation of this year’s festival. Del Toro waved to the cheering crowd and embraced his cast during the applause, with lead actors Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac moved to tears as they hugged each other, according to Variety.

Based on Mary Shelley’s 1818 gothic classic, Frankenstein stars Oscar Isaac as the unorthodox scientist and Jacob Elordi as the tragic creature he brings to life. The film, described as a gothic science fiction drama, is competing for the prestigious Golden Lion. Del Toro previously won the award in 2017 for The Shape of Water.

The ensemble cast also includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Christian Convery, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz. The film is produced by Del Toro alongside J Miles Dale and Scott Stuber.

Following its festival run, Frankenstein will have a limited theatrical release on October 17 before its global debut on Netflix on November 7.
