Kochi: Malayalam filmmaker Sanal Kumar Sasidharan was detained at Mumbai airport on Sunday following a lookout notice issued by the Kerala police in connection with a harassment complaint filed by an actress, officials said.

In a Facebook post, Sasidharan confirmed the development, writing that he had arrived at Mumbai airport but was detained.

A police officer from Kochi said that the Kochi City Police are in touch with Mumbai airport authorities regarding the situation.

The case dates back to January this year when the Elamakkara police registered a case against Sasidharan for allegedly harassing a prominent Malayalam actress on social media. At the time, Sasidharan was in the United States, prompting the police to issue a lookout circular to detain him upon his return to India.

“I have been detained as part of a lookout notice issued by the Kochi City Police. I believe the police and the communist party in Kerala will treat me as per the law. I am not aware of the case against me,” Sasidharan stated in his post.

A senior police officer in Kochi said, “We have received information about Sasidharan being detained at Mumbai airport. We are in touch with the airport authorities. Once confirmation is received, a police team will be sent to Mumbai to take him into custody.”

Earlier, Sasidharan had been arrested in 2022 for allegedly stalking the same actress online. He was later granted bail by the Aluva Judicial First Class Magistrate, police added.
