Mammootty returns in negative-shaded role in teaser of Kalamkaval
text_fieldsKochi: Malayalam superstar Mammootty is set to make a powerful return to the big screen with Kalamkaval, a crime drama that reunites him with actor Vinayakan after more than a decade. The film is directed by debutant Jithin K Jose, who earlier scripted Dulquer Salmaan’s Kurup.
The teaser, released this week, has already generated buzz, showing Mammootty in a menacing new avatar. It opens with the question, “Neenge Aru? (Who are you?)”, before cutting to Vinayakan as a police officer searching for a man named Nathu. The footage then shifts to Mammootty, who appears on screen with an intense, devilish energy as he locks eyes with the camera.
While releasing the teaser of Kalamkaval, the makers wrote on social media, “Every story has a side you don’t expect 🔥 Presenting the Official teaser of #Kalamkaval.”
Reports suggest Mammootty will portray a character with negative shades, a role he has not taken on in some time, while Vinayakan plays the conventional lead. This casting reversal has heightened anticipation around the film.
Director Jithin K Jose told Mathrubhumi that the role allowed Mammootty to explore layered emotions. “Kalamkaaval gave him ample scope to explore the layers of emotion, and he approached it with full enthusiasm. Watching him transform into the character on set was a privilege,” he said.
Produced under Mammootty’s own banner, Mammootty Kampany, Kalamkaval is said to be inspired by real-life events. The film features cinematography by Faisal Ali and music by Mujeeb Majeed of Kishkinda Kaandam fame. The release date is yet to be officially announced.
Apart from Kalamkaval, Mammootty also has Patriot, co-starring Mohanlal, lined up for release.
