New Delhi: Bollywood actor Preity Zinta on Tuesday strongly criticized the Kerala unit of the Congress party, accusing it of spreading fake news and misusing her name for political motives.

Her remarks came in response to allegations linking her to a bank loan from the crisis-hit New India Cooperative Bank, which recently collapsed.

In a post on X, Kerala Congress claimed that the actress had handed over her social media accounts to the BJP and, in return, had Rs 18 crore in bank loans written off without proper recovery procedures. The party further pointed out that the bank’s failure had left depositors stranded.

Dismissing the allegations, Preity Zinta hit back at the Congress state unit, calling their claims false and baseless.

“No one wrote off anything or any loan for me,” she asserted on X.

Refuting the accusation of giving control of her social media accounts to the BJP, she slammed the party for peddling misinformation.

“The Congress party should have some shame for spreading fake news,” she said.

The actress further clarified that the bank loan in question had been fully repaid a decade ago.

“Hope this clarifies and helps so there are no misunderstandings in the future,” she added.

Preity Zinta’s name surfaced amid allegations of corruption surrounding the New India Cooperative Bank, which recently collapsed, prompting the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to impose strict restrictions.

The RBI cited financial irregularities as the reason for the crackdown, prohibiting the bank from issuing new loans, renewing existing ones, accepting fresh deposits, or selling its assets.

Reports indicate that around 80 employees of the bank were forced to resign in 2019, after which they approached the Central Bank, demanding a forensic audit and the dissolution of the board of directors.
