New Delhi: Authorities confirmed that a large fire that started late on Saturday at a children's hospital in Delhi claimed the lives of at least seven babies. At 11:32 p.m., the Delhi Fire Services reported receiving a call regarding a fire at a baby care centre in the East Delhi neighbourhood of Vivek Vihar. Up to 16 fire tenders were then dispatched to the scene, NDTV reported.

At the moment, five more children are receiving care at the hospital. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

In a different incident, a residential structure in the Shahdara neighbourhood of Delhi caught fire on Saturday night. Thirteen individuals were rescued and transported to a hospital after five fire department vehicles hurried to the scene upon receiving the information, an official said.

Thirty-five people perished in a large fire that started at a gambling area in Rajkot, Gujarat, earlier on Saturday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu, and Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar all expressed sorrow over the incident.
