Ahmedabad plane crash: UK families allege receiving wrong bodies of loved ones
text_fieldsIn a troubling development following the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171, two families in the United Kingdom have alleged they received the wrong bodies of their loved ones.
DNA tests reportedly revealed mismatches between the remains returned to the families and their deceased relatives.
James Healy, the lawyer representing the families, stated that out of the 12 to 13 sets of remains repatriated to the UK, at least two were identified as not belonging to the victims’ relatives based on DNA analysis.
The incident stems from the June 12 crash of Air India’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which had departed from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport around 1:30 pm, en route to London. Just moments into the flight, the aircraft crashed into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College in Meghaninagar, Ahmedabad. The crash triggered a fast-spreading fire and resulted in the deaths of nearly everyone on board - out of 242 passengers and crew, only one person survived.
Air India, now under Tata Group ownership, has acknowledged that an investigation into the situation is underway. However, no formal confirmation has yet been made regarding the alleged misidentification.
The affected families are now demanding answers and accountability as authorities work to clarify the circumstances surrounding the mistaken repatriation of remains.
