Mumbai: AIMIM leader and former Maharashtra MLA Waris Pathan has reported that his social media account was hacked, with extortionists demanding Rs 5 lakh to prevent the release of morphed private photos of him and his family.

Worli Police have registered a case under Sections 308(2), 308(3), and 351(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNS) against unidentified accused, and an investigation is underway.

The threats began on April 16 when hackers accessed Pathan's account and stole private photographs. Using three international numbers, they made repeated calls demanding the ransom, warning of digitally altered images being circulated online.

Preliminary probe findings point to a possible Cambodia link, though further verification continues. Pathan lodged a formal complaint at Worli Police Station, prompting the swift case registration.

Further updates are awaited.
