AIMPLB temporarily suspends Waqf protests over Pahalgam terror attack

New Delhi: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Wednesday issued a strong condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack and announced its decision to temporarily pause protests against the recently amended Waqf law for three days. This gesture was made as an expression of solidarity with the bereaved families.
The attack, which unfolded at the renowned tourist destination of Pahalgam in south Kashmir's Anantnag district on Tuesday, tragically claimed the lives of 26 people, most of whom were tourists, while leaving several others injured.
In its condolence statement, AIMPLB expressed grief over the devastating incident, describing it as deeply tragic. The Board clarified that in honour of those affected, it would suspend its protest activities under the Waqf Protection Campaign for three days, commencing April 23. During this time, no activities related to the campaign would take place, as per the decision outlined in the Board’s statement.
SQR Ilyas, the national convener of the Majlis-e-Amal for the protection of Waqf under AIMPLB, issued a separate statement denouncing the terrorist attack in Pahalgam as both heinous and unacceptable.
He remarked on the gravity of the tragedy and reiterated the Board’s commitment to expressing sympathy and respect for the victims and their families. To ensure adherence to this decision, Ilyas circulated directives to state and district conveners of the campaign, instructing them to immediately pause all protest programmes.
While underscoring the importance of mourning this tragedy, Ilyas also emphasised that the temporary suspension of protests should not be mistaken for a withdrawal from the campaign against the “controversial amendments” to the Waqf Act.
He confirmed that protest activities would resume following the three-day period of pause, ensuring that the campaign's objectives remained intact despite the temporary halt.
