Allahabad HC asks govt to file report on 'dual citizenship' claim against Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on Monday directed the Union government to submit a report within four weeks regarding allegations of "dual citizenship" against Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.
The case stems from a petition filed by Karnataka-based lawyer and BJP member S. Vignesh Shishir, who claims that Gandhi held British citizenship and, therefore, was ineligible to contest elections in India, according to a report by Deccan Herald.
Shishir's petition seeks Gandhi’s disqualification from the Lok Sabha and the cancellation of his Indian citizenship. During Monday’s hearing, the Union government requested eight weeks to file its response, but the court granted only four weeks and scheduled the next hearing for April 21.
The petitioner claims to have documents and emails that allegedly "prove" Gandhi’s British citizenship. The court's order now requires the government to investigate and respond to these allegations.
