Angered about being denied entry into a bus over the 50 per cent capacity limit, people blocked a road in the national capital and vandalised the bus.

Some people blocked MB road in the city and broke the glasses of a DTC bus around 10:30 am in the morning, said Additional District Commissioner of Police (South District), Harsh Vardhan.

"The issue was regarding non-availability of seats in the buses due to Covid related restrictions," the official said. The windowpanes of the bus were also shattered after the angry mob resorted to stone-pelting.

After things escalated, police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitated commuters. Chaos and a minor scuffle between the people and the cops followed. The police, however, dispersed the crowd and registered a case for violating pandemic guidelines and destruction of public property among others. Five people were detained from the spot as a preventive measure.

"Even yesterday the people were angry and were forcibly trying to get inside the bus, but, things turned violent today," said a conductor of one of the buses.

The city is currently under a yellow alert in light of the rising number of Covid cases. Long queues have ensued outside Metro stations, and bus stops as a result of the new curbs.
