"Approach Allahabad HC first", SC tells habeas corpus petitioner for Siddique Kappen

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday told Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), which sought the release of Kerala Journalist Sidhique Kappan, to approach Allahabdad High Court first.
Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal appeared for the KUWJ and contended that no court in the state of Uttar Pradesh would grant bail to the petitioner.
The Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde responded that nothing would happen and if anything happen, they can approach the court.
Siddique Kappan, a journalist working for Azhimukham, was arrested on October 5 along with three others, on the way to Uttar Pradesh, to meet the victim of Hathras gang-rape, whose body was cremated by the police in dead night hours without the consent of her family.
Last week, the UP Police had registered an FIR against unknown persons for charges of sedition, promoting social disharmony etc., alleging that the protests over the incident were part of an "international conspiracy" to malign the state.
