Arundhati Roy launches new book, voices solidarity with Gaza
text_fieldsAuthor Arundhati Roy launched her new book Mother Mary Comes to Me at St. Teresa’s College in Ernakulam on Friday, where she combined personal reflections with strong political remarks.
Speaking at the event, Roy accused India of indirectly aiding the war in Gaza. "America is helping the biggest genocide in history with its wealth. India is also helping with its poverty. So we are giving people to fight. We do not know whether the taxes we pay are going to genocide," she said.
Roy stressed that she cannot attend any forum without showing solidarity with Gaza. She also highlighted the denial of bail to Umar Khalid and the imprisonment of GN Saibaba, calling them examples of injustice in the country.
The writer also shared a lighter moment from her travels. She recalled arriving at the Delhi airport, where a Malayali security officer checking her ID remarked that there was an Arundhati in Kerala who was “always in trouble.” The story drew laughter from the audience.
The book, which recounts memories of her mother, Mary Roy, received its global first public release at the Ernakulam event. Writer K.R. Meera, Arundhati’s brother Lalit Roy, Penguin Random House India Editor-in-Chief Manasi Subramaniam, Ravi Deasy, Jisha John, and Ranjini Mitra were among the speakers.
