Bihar: A woman in Bihar has alleged that she was gang-raped inside an ambulance after fainting during a government recruitment examination, prompting widespread political outrage and the arrest of two suspects.

According to police, the woman had appeared for a home guard recruitment drive on July 24 in Gayaji when she fainted during the process. She was transported to Anugrah Narain Medical College and Hospital in an ambulance. After regaining consciousness, she accused two individuals—the ambulance driver and a technician—of raping her inside the vehicle en route to the hospital.

Superintendent of Police (Town) Ramanand Kumar Kaushal said the accused were taken into custody shortly after the woman identified them. “Their explanations were unsatisfactory, so they were arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita,” he stated. He added that the woman’s medical examination has been completed and further action will follow based on the medical report findings.

The alleged incident has triggered sharp criticism from both ruling and opposition politicians. Union Minister Chirag Paswan, an ally of the National Democratic Alliance in Bihar, condemned the incident as "deplorable" and expressed regret over supporting a regime that "has failed to maintain law and order." Speaking in Patna before leaving for a rally in Gayaji, he said, "The culprits may be in custody, but the fact that such a crime could occur is alarming. The administration has failed to prevent such incidents."

Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, Tejashwi Yadav, also weighed in, sharing a news clipping of the case on X along with the hashtag: "Nitish sarkar hatao, beti bachao" (Vote out the Nitish government to protect the girl child). He accused the state of descending into "rakshas raj" (rule of demons) and criticised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputies for their "criminal silence" on crimes against women.

State Congress president Rajesh Kumar echoed the sentiments, calling the incident a sign of collapsing law and order in Bihar. He said the episode was emblematic of the ruling dispensation’s unruly conduct, as seen during the recent Assembly session. "Our party stands firmly with the victim and is committed to ensuring she gets justice," he added.
