CBI nabs Delhi Police ASI red-handed taking ₹35,000 bribe
text_fieldsNew Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Delhi Police posted at Dwarka North Police Station for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹35,000 from a complainant.
The arrest followed a case registered by the CBI a day earlier, on July 8, against the ASI and a Head Constable after allegations surfaced that the duo had demanded an initial bribe of ₹50,000. In return, they allegedly promised to permit the complainant and his associate to run a vegetable shop in a local market without interference from law enforcement.
According to a CBI statement, the accused also demanded a monthly payment of ₹5,000 to ₹10,000. Following negotiations, they reportedly agreed to reduce the initial bribe to ₹35,000 and further asked for ₹2,000 per person each month thereafter.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and caught the ASI red-handed while receiving the ₹35,000 bribe. He was immediately taken into custody, and further investigation is ongoing.
This arrest adds to a growing list of similar actions by the CBI against Delhi Police personnel over the past year. In March, the agency arrested a head constable and a constable from Sagarpur police station in South West Delhi for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹2.5 lakh bribe.
In October last year, the CBI arrested an inspector and a sub-inspector from Burari police station for allegedly demanding a bribe of ₹1.5 crore. Sub-Inspector Bhupesh Kumar was caught while receiving a ₹10 lakh part-payment on behalf of the inspector.
In another incident in November, a constable from the Anti-Narcotics Task Force was arrested for allegedly accepting a ₹2 lakh bribe in exchange for not framing a person in a case.
