Cyberfraud: Mumbai court rejects Class 12 student's bail plea
text_fieldsMumbai: In a case of alleged cyberfraud, a Mumbai sessions court denied a Class 12 student bail for involvement in the fraud, which involves Rs 3.81 crore. The court noted that cybercrimes and digital frauds are rampant in India, threatening the nation’s economy, The Indian Express reported.
According to the case registered by the CBI, naming a company SP Cargo and Courier Services Pvt Ltd, its director Sudhir Palande and other unknown persons, private persons and firms were cheated of Rs 3.81 crore, and the amount was transferred on a single day to one mule account through 12 transactions.
Special judge JP Darekar said in his order on Friday that cybercrimes and digital frauds are complex in nature and involve the use of electronic devices, information and technology, which are digital evidence.
On July 9, the CBI arrested the mentioned student, identified as Yash Thakur, accusing him of acting as a middleman between the cyber frauds and the main accused, Palande. According to the central agency, Thakur had booked tickets for stay and travel for the main accused in Nagpur during the fraud period. He also helped the accused to procure a SIM card on the basis of fake documents.
In his bail application, Thakur claimed that he did not know Palande, nor was there any evidence that he had in any manner benefited from the fraud. He asserted that he was just a young boy pursuing his education.
Last week, the court had rejected a bail application by another student, Shaurya Singh, TIE reported.
